Fort Lewis College Athletics

I lived in Durango, Colorado from 1995 until 2004. I bought my first camera when I lived there, and earned my college degree at Fort Lewis College. My first paid photography gig was self -assigned: I bought a Nikon Coolpix 990 and an HP Photosmart P1000 and a 9-volt converter to plug the printer in to the cigarette lighter in my pickup and my girlfriend and I sold 8x10 inkjet prints at a mountain bike race in Pagosa Springs, Colorado. I grossed over $600 that day, which was pretty awesome.

Long story short: I had a new job that I would stick with for at least 10 years.

One of my favorite subjects over the years has been Fort Lewis College athletics. I have photographed the RMAC champion men's soccer team and the national champion cycling team. I photographed Tom Danielson when he was just a really fast local mountain bike racer. I saw a fellow student sink a game-winning 3 pointer from "downtown" - where I was way too close to him to possibly get a shot. When that ball went in I had about the same view on it as him.

The photos after the link are highlights from those years. Enjoy!

MLB Playoffs

October baseball starts tomorrow. I was lucky enough to shoot the Colorado Rockies this season, and during the year, caught quite a few teams. With the elimination of the Twins from playoff contention tonight, though, I only photographed two of the 8 playoff teams. Cubs and Phillies came to town before I started, and none of the AL finalists came through town (besides the Twins).

I did catch 4 Dodgers games and 2 Brewers games.

Colorado Rockies outfielder Matt Holliday and LA Dodgers outfielder Manny Ramirez share a lighter moment.

Photos - Boulder Racing Cyclocross

CYCLOCROSS

September 27, 2008: I photographed the first cyclocross race of the season for the Boulder Racing Cyclocross series at Interlocken park in Broomfield, CO, on Saturday. Perfect weather, a nice course, great light, and an appearance by Georgia Gould and other elite racers made it a great event. Check out the gallery!

1st post - background

Several years ago I blogged. This was before the word existed. The entries were always based on photos I had taken, things my friends did, and things I was interested in. Today I am writing because I can't break into that old website (hosted on yahoo's Geocities - my username and password combo that I do remember don't seem to grant me access to the HTML of that site). I like the fact that the site remains up though. There are some pretty cool things on the site. I will eventually move some of it over here.

So my purpose for this new site is currently two-fold. One - I can't seem to get Google to find any of the images in my Photoshelter Archive. The Photoshelter Archive is a great tool, but if I can't get the search term "Denver Tour de Fat photos" to link to my album titled "Denver Tour De Fat Photos" then we have a problem. If by chance you are looking for photos of the event on September 13, please see my Photoshelter Archive page. You will find the photos there.

Two - I have ideas. I plan to share some of these ideas here. They involve voting with your dollars, supporting local, sustainable economies, among other subjects. I am a photographer with interest in the current state of the profession of photography, the tools of the trade, and other photographers, particularly photojournalists.
